Episode 111: Josh Giesbrecht
This conversation was kicked off after I read Josh’s blogpost Why school itself undermines the message of lifelong learning. The subtext we send students daily in class through the format of how we teach and grade is something that’s interested me since I started teaching. In Episode 111, Josh and I chat about some of our experiences and thoughts surrounding the messages we send our students and how life doesn’t go downhill after high school.

The earlier bits resonated with me. I just made a comment on Josh’s site to the effect of: Maybe we’re not saying you HAVE to learn it NOW merely because they won’t pick it up later… but more because society has dictated that if you don’t learn it NOW, you won’t get a job. And as everyone knows, if you don’t have a job, you’re somehow a terrible, terrible person.
A bit more topical to the podcast though – I think the connection between probability and polynomial expansions is a bit of a “common cause” case, rather than a true connection. Sort of like saying there’s a connection between ice cream sales and forest fires. (“Hmmm, the months we sell more ice cream, there are more fires! Only you can prevent ice cream sales!”) Just as temperatures are a common cause to both events there, patterning links not only to arrangements of items but also synthetic division. Though I could have WILDLY misinterpreted the reference.
Also, no questions at the end? Suspecting it was a time thing, but kind of missed those.

With you on the connection–don’t think I was saying it well.
An yeah, the interview with Josh was actually months ago prior to having the final questions sorted and we had limited time for the not-in-person interview. Will just have to have him back on again someday 🙂
