Let’s get this party started!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 9, 2013 by Ashli

I am happy to announce that next Thursday, March 14th, 2013, a.k.a. Pi Day, will be the official launch of the Infinite Tangents Podcast!

In preparation for the launch, I’ve created a short introduction to the podcast covering its host, its goals, and how you can help. You listen to the intro here.

As mentioned in the podcast, there are a few ways you can help out to make Infinite Tangents worth listening to.

1. Drop me a line in the comments or DM me on twitter (@mythagon) to let me know who you’d like to hear and why.

2. Get your voice out there by answering one/some/all of the prompts below! Just record yourself in a quiet place saying the question and your response. These are meant to be quick, so responses under 30 seconds are appreciated, though I’m not going to music you off the stage if you’re making a great point. Once you’ve recorded, drop me a line at ashli (dot) black (at) gmail (dot) com. (You’ll need to clean that up–trying to avoid the spiders on the internet that send spam.) If the file seems too large to email we can figure out a way to transfer it via dropbox or google drive.
-How do you start your teaching day?
-What do you do during lunch?
-What’s your favorite snack?
-What would you like to get done in the times between classes?
-Do you find yourself only talking about teaching? How do you stop?
-When do you grade?
-What do you do during your planning time?
-Do you do peer observation or review?
-What are the attributes of an effective teacher you work with?
-How do you reflect on your teaching & what do you see as the benefit of doing so?
-If you could have time with anyone out there in the edu-sphere, who would you choose and why?

Thanks to everyone who has offered their support and suggestions so far, I look forward to hearing your stories.

Cheers!

Ashli

p.s. The podcast will be available on iTunes, but it takes a while to work through the system. I’ll let you all know when you can subscribe to it there :]

I’ve got some travel ahead this year and would love to record some in-person conversations. March 1 – 3: Syracuse, NY (IM&E)

April 3 – 5: Berkeley, CA (MSRI)

April 6 – 12: Seattle, WA

April 14 – 20: Denver, CO (ASSM, NCSM, NCTM)

Hope to see you around!

podcast schedule

Posted in Uncategorized on December 10, 2012 by Ashli

Hi all! Figured I would post a schedule of sorts so you know when to expect podcasting to begin for Infinite Tangents.

December & January: R & D. I’ll be using Audacity for editing and once I am home and near civilization (electronics stores) I’ll be picking up one of these for recording as it has many positive reviews for podcasting and will work well for recording 1, 2, or group podcasts. Still working on how/where to host the files and I’m learning all about how to format in order to get it onto iTunes. Anyone out there with experience is welcome to post below with suggestions.

Late January: recording will start. I have kind of a nutters travel schedule January – May (Arkansas, Tucson, Syracuse, Berkeley, Seattle, Denver, Saskatoon) and I plan on stalking people at those locations. I’ve just found some articles about recording off of skype feeds, so if that works I might get into some of that as well.

March(???): publishing. I’m putting some question marks there because it’s all going to depend on how good I am at tracking down folk to interview, how challenging the editing process is for a total newb, and how crazy February gets since I have a big project that will consume that month. I also want to have several wrapped up in order to keep to a consistent publishing schedule. It’s a goal.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. I want teaching voices to be heard. You are all so amazing to talk to and we have the best edu-nerd conversations when we do get together #pcmi #tweetups #TMC. So let me know what you would like to hear. Thanks. – Ashli

Hello world! *taptap* Is this thing on?

Posted in Uncategorized on September 30, 2012 by Ashli

So the math-edu-twitter-blog-department has a lot of things going for it. Twitter Math Camp. A welcome page for those new on the digital block. The Global Math Department.

I feel fortunate to have been a part of the community for over two years now. The ideas and support have been amazing and the professional development is some of the best out here on the net. That said, I want to give back. I started thinking about all the things I loved about the math ed community and what I could do to support both it and teachers as professionals.

Over the last few years I’ve had the good fortune of traveling a bit around the country and meeting other math educators. To chat. To share ideas. To listen. To debate the intellectual work that we love. I believe that the time has come to record these conversations. I want to have a record of our work to share with each other an the world at large. I want to create something that pre-service, new, experienced, and veteran teachers can listen to and be inspired by.

Infinite Tangents is about the voices in education that can too often be drowned out by politics and policies. This podcast is about the work teachers do daily to make their classrooms places where children can thrive. Episodes will focus on happenings in the classroom, teachers reflecting on their practice, and other stories from the front lines.

So thanks for checking out the site. Drop me a line anytime if there is something you would like to hear or someone you would like to hear from. – Ashli
